Commandments and Commentary
Group exhibition Commandments and Commentary: Artistic responses to ethical commands in times of crisis opens on February 12, 2022 at the Kupferman Collection House. I will be showing my interpretation of the Tenth Commandment, Do not covet.
Here is an excerpt from the exhibition text:
The exhibition “Commandments and Commentary” was conceived and initiated by artist Idit Levavi-Gabbai during the year 2020. The initiative arose from the combined experiences of a worldwide health crisis, lockdowns, political instability, social protests, and the closure of cultural and art activities. The starting point for this exhibition are the biblical Ten Commandments, the Decalogue as both a primary ethical code in Western culture and a foundational text in the Jewish tradition.
The exhibition encompasses two gallery spaces.
In the entrance hall: Commandments at Crossroads: Historical objects alongside Israeli works of art by Arie Aroch, David Ginton, Shraga Weil, Michael Sgan-Cohen, and Malachi Sgan-Cohen.
In the main gallery: 10<>20 Collaborative Art Project: Twenty artists accepted the invitation to take part in this unique project, which then developed and took shape within their studios over the past months. Each artist chose one of the Ten Commandments and created a personal artistic interpretation of it. The uniform dimensions of the works were determined ahead of time, enabling the display of the works in a format that evokes two rows of columns.
Participating artists: Farid Abu-Shakra, Ronit Agassi, Gilad Ophir, Yeshayahu Ish Gabbai, Drora Dominey, Ruthi Helbitz-Cohen, Idit Levavi-Gabbai, Shlomi Lellouche, Liav Mizrahi, Assi Meshullam, Malachi Sgan-Cohen, Merav Sudai, Naomi Siman-Tov, Assad Azi, Amit Cabessa, Ruth Kestenbaum Ben-Dov, Noa Raz Melamed, Dorit Ringart, Michal Shachnai Yaakobi, and Amir Tomashov.
